Jeremiah 33:14-26 Step 3 Mine (Part 1)

INTRODUCTION TO POST.

Welcome back! Have you chosen where you’ll concentrate your efforts in this study? I felt the Spirit urging me to look more deeply into the second Huh? I wrote about last week, the it Jeremiah refers to as being called The LORD is our righteousness in verse 16. I’m depending on the Spirit to help me discern an answer that makes sense because right now, in my own understanding, I feel pretty clueless!

Last Week’s Work

After prayer, I felt the Spirit emphasizing these aspects of characters, locations, and timeframes:

WHO (CHARACTERS)

Of the characters mentioned in this passage, I felt the Spirit drawing my attention to the LORD, Jeremiah, the people to whom the LORD made His promises, and the righteous Branch. This is what I learned about them:

The LORD, for whom Jeremiah speaks throughout this passage, will keep the promise He made to Israel and Judah; there will be a righteous Branch for David who will bring justice and righteousness in the land.
He promises that Judah will be saved, Jerusalem will dwell securely, and it will be called the LORD is our righteousness.
He goes on to say David will always have a man on Israel’s throne and the offspring of both David and the Levitical priests will be innumerable, and these covenants are virtually unbreakable.
Finally, He acknowledges people say He won’t keep those promises, but assures that He absolutely will have mercy on them and restore their fortunes, and the Levitical priests will always have a man to offer sacrifices.
Jeremiah, the character after whom this biblical book is named, is the one to whom these prophecies are directed.
The “promise beneficiaries” are named or described as follows: the houses of Israel and Judah, the people of Judah and Jerusalem who will be saved and dwell securely, David and the Levitical priests, my people whom others despised and refused to recognize their nation, Jacob and David’s offspring, the offspring of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob.
At this point, I think there’s overlap among at least some of these groups. For example, I think the term house of Israel might refer to the same individuals as the offspring of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, since Genesis 32:28 indicates Jacob’s name was changed to Israel , and this was done by God according to Genesis 35:10. I hope I have a chance to investigate these identities as the study progresses.
The righteous Branch for David who’ll execute justice and righteousness. In function, this sounds like the kings of the Old Testament. I noticed in the ESV, Branch is capitalized, which, as I understand it, can signify either a proper noun—like someone’s name, which doesn’t seem likely here—or a deity (i.e., God, Jesus, Holy Spirit). Both this individual and the LORD are associated with righteousness, so I am leaning into the theory that Jeremiah was describing God and/or Jesus as the righteous Branch.

WHERE (LOCATION)

The land: where David’s righteous branch will execute justice and righteousness, which I suspect refers to where Judah will be saved.
Jerusalem: where people will dwell securely and will refer to it as the LORD is our righteousness.
On the throne of the house of Israel: from where a descendant of David will always rule.
In my [the LORD’s] presence: where the Levitical priests won’t lack a man to offer sacrifices.
Heaven and earth: where the LORD has established His covenant with day and night and established the fixed order.

WHEN (TIME FRAMES)

Jeremiah notes a single timeframe at the beginning of this passage, the days are coming, and refers to it three more times as those days, that time, and again as those days to describe when He planned to fulfill the promise He made to the houses of Israel and Judah, causing a righteous branch to spring up for David who will execute justice and righteousness in the land. At the same time, Judah will be saved, Jerusalem will dwell securely, and it will be called The Lord is our righteousness.

MINE: Locate any special statements (blessings, commands, curses, prayers, promises, requests, and/or warnings) in the passage.
MINE: Note any lists (3 or more similar items) mentioned in Jeremiah 33:14-26.
Record what the Spirit prompts so I can use it in Steps 4 and 5.

Jeremiah 33:14-26 Step 1: Pray & Step 2 Survey

Hello! I’m glad you’re joining me for this study of a sliver of Jeremiah’s prophecies associated with another of God’s names, The LORD our righteousness.

As usual, I’ve written a prayer I’ll be repeating each time I study this passage. But, unlike all my other studies since I’ve been noting Huh? and Wow! moments; I didn’t really experience any Wow!s this time. I think that’s because I’m so new to studying prophecy. Even so, I’m positive the Spirit will show me plenty of things that will wow me as this study progresses. God’s Word is absolutely that awesome—even the hard parts! I hope you’ll stick with me through the remaining seven weeks and embrace what we discover together!

Last Week’s Work

MY PRAYER
Father God, thank You for prophecy in Your Word. Even though it might be hard to understand, I know it has value for me today. Open my eyes, ears, and heart to see, hear, and connect with the message You have for me now in Jeremiah 33:14-26, and help me understand and apply it for Your glory. I pray for this in Jesus’s name. Amen.

HUH? MOMENTS
As I mentioned above, all I had were Huh? moments this time. It sure feels like there’s a lot to investigate about this passage!

What promise did the LORD make to the houses of Israel and Judah that will be fulfilled in the coming days?
What is referred to as it that will be called The LORD is our righteousness?
Does the covenant with David (characterized as unbreakable) refer to v17?
Does the covenant with the Levitical priests (also characterized as unbreakable) refer to v18?
Who are these people who trash-talk God’s chosen race? And who are the two clans the LORD chose?
The last two verses of this passage are particularly confusing to me. What is the LORD really saying there?!

PRAY for the Spirit to help you choose a focus point for the remainder of this study using the Huh?s I mentioned above, or the results of your work this past week. Then, in your journal, record that personal treasure He identifies, along with any verse(s) relating to it from the study text.
MINE: Read Jeremiah 33:14-26, focusing on three factors describing the setting of this text. Note anything the Spirit emphasizes about the characters involved, any locations mentioned, and any timeframes discussed.

Jeremiah 33:14-26 DISO Study Introduction

Welcome to my fourth eight-week DISO study on biblical names of God! Today, we’re breaking ground in Jeremiah, learning about YHWH Tsidqenu, The LORD our righteousness.

This is new territory for me: I’ve not yet applied the DISO process to any of the Old Testament prophets, so I’m excited (and frankly, a little nervous!) about studying Jeremiah 33:14-26 this way. But I know the Holy Spirit is with me, and that means this is going to be good, even if it’s a bit of a challenge as I work through it all. I hope you’ll plan to check in with me (or even study the passage on your own!) over the next eight weeks and see how it goes.

Let’s Study Jeremiah 33:14-26!

This week, I’ll begin by praying and surveying Jeremiah 33:14-26. If you want to study along with me, here’s what I recommend you start with:

A copy of Jeremiah 33:14-26.
I like to refer often to the text I’m studying and sometimes make notes on it, so I copy the passage from blueletterbible.org, paste it into a word processing program like Google Docs or MS Word, change the formatting to suit my preferences, and print it out. If you want to use the ESV translation, here’s a pdf of my Scripture study sheet with lots of room for doodles and notes.
A study journal.
We’ll spend the next seven weeks immersed in and learning about Jeremiah 33:14-16. Since the work we’ll do each week builds on what came before, plan to record at least some highlights from your work over the coming weeks. I’m old-school and like the pen-and-paper method for journaling my studies, but it’s okay if that doesn’t work for you. If you don’t have time to write out or type your notes, consider dictating them into a notes app or recording audio files instead.

Or, you may decide to try a few of the steps on your own as you feel led and/or just read my notes posted here. That’s great, too. You’ll get familiar with the process and see how the Spirit speaks to my situation. Either way, I appreciate you checking in with me, even if you can’t dig into Jeremiah 33:14-26 yourself right now.

Dig-In Challenges

So, here’s how I’ll be studying this week:

PRAY: I’ll be creating a prayer with which I’ll start each of my weekly study sessions. Full disclosure: I usually just adapt a previous prayer. Though I’ve pretty much memorized it, I still write my prayer in my study journal as a reminder to pray each time I study this text this way.
SURVEY: Then I’ll read Jeremiah 33:14-26, noting anything that makes me say, “huh?” (as in, “I wonder what that means?”) or “wow” (as in, “that is so awesome!”). I’ll record these and later ask the Spirit to direct me to the one I should dig into right now.
